(Los Angeles)  War IS Gore For "Soldiers"

Sean Andrews, EWs

Twenty years ago, a film about one of the Viet Nam War's bloodiest battles probably wouldn't have made much of a stir.  "We Were Soldiers", in a post September 11th Era of patriotism, could be a generation's benchmark--when viewers keep in mind that it appears to be "blood & guts" strewn for a reason.  "Blackhawk Down" carried February, with Josh Harnett's sure to be Oscar nominated performance--with "Saving Private Ryan" style cinematography....and violence.  War is big.

One thing about critics:  they sure know how to get on TV in the days before a film is released and pan  it, only to have it come out as #1 at the Box Office on Monday.  Nobody is perfect.  A pair of critics (remaining nameless) being interviewed on CNN the week before it's debut last month panned the film due to it's explicit gore.

Movie-goers voted with their wallets, and the film remained #1 for almost three weeks.  Directors and producers in this age of "Realistic War=More Gore", seem to be trying to tell us what actual veterans have been trying to tell people for ages.  War IS Hell, and maybe something civilization needs to see portrayed as it truly is.  Something to avoid, if at all possible.

(Los Angeles)  Animated Films Trendy HITS

Rajit Pal Singh, EWs

Want an easy box office hit?  The recipe is simple: hire the most talented animators, write a cute story line that appeals to teens AND adults, then mix in a generous helping of celebrities and stars to voice the characters. What you end up is monster money maker--"Ice Age".

Twentieth Century Fox' put together that team, and then some for $47.9M right out of the box.  Expect the film to triple that throughout April, and double that next year as it hits stores as video and DVD.

Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, and Denis Leary all add their voices to make their characters at times cuddly and at others adult-concern lifelike.  Watch this and other Shrek, Alladin, and Toy Story genre films to continue to rake in the cash as actor-on-film producers wince when their movies have to compete head to head.
