MUSICWORLDS Paint It Apathetic.....
(November 18, 2001) (Archive) EntertainmentWorlds was able to hook up with Rolling Stones frontman, and recent solo act Mick Jagger. With his new solo CD "Angel In The Doorway", done on the Virgin label, in stores now, it seemed an appropriate time to ask about his views on .mp3's and internet music swapping. EWs: "It's been a 5 year hiatus since "Voodoo Lounge", and before Napster, Bearshare, or any of the other Gneutella services were born...are you concerned about losing royalties to internet .mp3 swappers? And what did you think about the whole Metallica led war for artists rights vs Napster?" Mick: "I think it's great getting music on the internet. The issue of whether you're going to get music for free as you do sort of on the radio is another." "I mean, whether people believe that musicians should be paid for transmitting their songs or broadcasting their songs on different media. If you're a musician you'd like to get paid the same as people get paid for doing things." "You know, the issue is very simple really. There's always -- there's always lots of places where you don't get paid. I mean, you don't expect to get paid from, like, countries like China and all that sort of thing, or you don't expect to get paid from bootlegs." "So there's always some areas where you don't get paid. But that was a huge issue for record companies because they should not be limited to how they wish to obtain music. I felt that there wasn't going to be any more music for them to put out on CD's anymore if that had gone on." "I think that issue's more or less sort of settled down somewhat, and seems to be settling itself in the good old American way."
EWs: "You've got your own website up at mickjagger.com, what will surfers (and fans) find there?" Mick: "Well, you can find photos, a lot of photos. You can find some very strange video interpretations of the tunes from the album, which are kind of fascinatingly artsy. You can find stuff about my films. You can find a jukebox. You can find a forum where I think people can -- people can, you know, talk about what they like and don't like and compare Lenny Kravitz with Keith Richards, that sort of nonsense. A complete time line and some videos. That's about it, really." "God Gave Me Everything" (co-written with Lenny Kravitz) sounds like the runaway initial hit single, the video having been rolled out on a recent half-time of "ABC's NFL Monday Night Football", accompanied by and a few tongue-in-cheek remarks in a quick side-by-side with color commentator Dennis Miller, both pre-plugging Jagger's Pre-Thanksgiving TV extravaganza. Hardcore Stones fans will plunk down their cash to buy the CD regardless. C'mon...Mick is Mick. Other buyers will likely be those wishing to hear what Jagger's collaboration with Lenny Kravitz, Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Bono of U2, and Wyclef Jean turned out. If you can't name 10 Stones songs off the top of your head, you probably won't buy "Angel In The Doorway". EWs Rating: 8.5
