(Los Angeles) King Konga Ready To Explode!
When a new band appears on the National Stage, they tend to get categorized and pigeon-holed, "grunge", "metal", "pop". It's the handful of groups that come along that have the full package of talent, diversity, and multi-demographic appeal that tend to go HUGE, as well as fail to get compartmentalized. Meet King Konga.
This Hattiesburg, Mississippi based band's new CD "Something Good" has industry heads muttering "where have they been hiding these guys?" With Dan Hannon on guitar and lead vocals, Tony Lymon on MalletKat and specialized percussion, Steve Cook on bass, and Skeeto Valdez on drums, King Konga churns out a string of tunes that has multiple format success written all over them. Not since Hootie & The Blowfish, Dave Mathews, and Blues Traveler has a band's distinctive sound straddled CHR/Pop, Alternative, and Adult Contemporary formats. King Konga is a truly refreshing success in those footsteps. Just a bunch of guys who met at college, the band's unassuming Southern upbringing and down to earth appeal shows that their "Woodstock '99" appearance didn't go to their heads.
With track 1, "Never Gets Any Better", you're pulled into the band's psyche. This Alternative, driving, open tune, lets you know that King Konga is for real...a band with the "whole package". Without letup--track 2, the title track, "Something Good" is the break-out hit. A song that's funky beat, calypso feel, and warmth that has snow-bound listeners in Duluth, Minnesota thinking "SUMMER!" One question: "Ced Suelo" appears as a :21 second slide in to "Just Remember Me". It's short, pounding, multi layered Caribbean style percussion left our reviewers wondering what a full length version might sound like. The uptempo tracks show the band's strengths. The ballads show, if any, their minor short comings. Our Picks: MUST ADD'S: "Something Good", "Never Gets Any Better", "Only One", CHR, CHR/Pop, AC, Hot AC, and Alternative. HOT: "Just Remember Me", "Dancing Girls". CHR/Pop, Hot AC. "To Fall Alone", if it isn't under consideration already, is the kind of ballad that makes killer movie soundtrack fodder. OVERALL: Our reviewers like King Konga. The CD is definitely worth forking over your hard earned dough. Keep an eye on these guys. They have the kind of sound that stars are made of.
